Training and Education in Integral Environmental Management (IEMAS) The objective of this project was to develop training and educational materials for SMES in 6 industrial sectors (Tourism, Brewing, Graphics, Water Treatment, Metal Plating and the Wood/Furniture industry). This material integrates environmental issues such as Life Cycle Assessment, Sustainability and Product Design into an Environmental management System. The CTC assessed the requirements of two sectors in Ireland and developed suitable material. The ultimate objective of the project is to enable the self-implementation by companies of Environmental Management Systems, e.g. EMAS and ISO 14001. The experiences and case studies gained from these sectors in other countries was used, together with established management systems, to develop a new total environmental training manual. Project Partners: Instituut voor Torgepaste Milieu-Economie (TME - project co-ordinators) & TU Delft (Netherlands), COWI/I. Kruger AS (Denmark) Co-financed by: EU LIFE Programme (DG Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection)
Networked Environmental Action Training for SMES (NEAT)
This project was carried out by partners in four countries, and its objective was to produce, pilot and deliver a multi-lingual interactive multi-media training package (on CD-ROM) for developing environmental management skills in SMES. Chapters of the package include: Business and the Environment, the Benefits of Environmental Management, Self-Assessment; Pollution Prevention Techniques; Environmental Management Systems. This CD-ROM is now completed and available from the CTC. The CTC input to the project was in co-authoring the various chapter contents, in particular the section on environmental management systems, piloting the CD-ROM in Ireland and disseminating the project results in Ireland.
Project Partners: Ammatti Instituut (Finland), Business Eco-Logic, London Borough of Sutton (UK - project co-ordinator), Arnhem Local Authority (Netherlands)
Co-financed by: EU Leonardo Da Vinci Programme (DG Education, Training and Youth)

Environment Training Programme for Industry
The objective of this project, which was co-ordinated by IBEC) was to undertake a programme to raise environmental awareness and train several companies in Ireland. Staff of these companies who successfully completed this training were awarded with certificates by the NCEA. The CTC produced and delivered modules on waste minimisation and cleaner technology. A comprehensive environmental training manual was produced by the partners, for continued training programmes. The programme was successfully implemented for personnel in several Irish firms and the successful students received NCEA academic awards.
Project Partners: IBEC (Irish Business Employers Confederation) (project co-ordinator), EPA (Ireland), An Taisce (Ireland)
Co-financed by: EU LIFE Programme (DG Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection)

Vocational Training in Environmental Care and Management (Envirocare)
ENVIROCARE moves beyond SME environmental education - one step forward, to training at the Vocational Level. In this way, young workers will enter the workforce with a prior awareness and knowledge of the environmental effects and solutions in their chosen vocational field/industrial sector. The objective of the project is to develop a multi-media interactive training tool for vocational students including CD-ROM, teachers' guide, and Internet support. The Clean Technology Centre is co-ordinating and managing this project and also has a role in overall content development, authoring one of the main chapters, piloting the CD in Ireland

and disseminating the results.
Project Partners: Cork Institute of Technology (Distance Education Centre) (Ireland), TU Graz (Austria), Aries Environmental Innovation (Netherlands), INETI/ITA (Portugal)
Co-financed by: EU Leonardo Da Vinci Programme (DG Education, Training and Youth)

Networked Environmental Action Training for small and medium enterprises (NEAT)
This project aims to take the NEAT CD-ROM (see above) and to adapt it to partners in Szentendre, Hungary and Ploiesti, Romania. Objectives include: to provide flexible training to SMES in Central European Countries (CECS) in environmental management; to prepare CECS for accession into the European Union; and to improve employability of CEC workers in a changing labour market through the establishment of new specific environmental competence based learning. CTC role is in environment related content development suitable for the target regions, assistance and advice to CEC project partners etc. Project partners: Business Eco-Logic (England), London Borough of Sutton (England - project co-ordinator), Regional Environmental Centre for CEE (Hungary).
Co-financed by: EU Leonardo Da Vinci Programme (DG Education, Training and Youth)

Technological training for SMES
The purpose of this project is to develop training materials for SMES in the Czech Republic in order to reduce pollution in the region, develop skills in current and future small enterprises, and help the Czech Republic to meet its requirements for accession into the European Union. The Clean Technology Centre will have responsibility for assessing the needs of SMES in the region and developing and testing suitable environment-related modules in the training package. This package will include CD-ROM, manuals, Internet support and pilot courses.
Partner companies: BIC Ltd Ostrava (Czech Republic); BIC Ltd. Zwicau (Germany); STENUM GmbH (Austria); VSB - Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic - project co-ordinators)

European Network on Good Environmental Practices (GEP net)
The aim of GEP net is: to create a European network of suppliers and users of process and product oriented good environmental practices in order to aid awareness raising, dissemination and application of these practices. This dissemination will occur through a flexible knowledge and information system on the one hand and a marketing and communication platform on the other. GEP net is composed of organisations and enterprises from EU member states and other European countries, all of whom play an important role as intermediates and suppliers of environmental information and technologies to end users in industry - in particular SMES. GEP net will be run mainly on the internet (www.gepnet.org) and will consist of exchange platform, as well as existing and new databases. Financial support was received by the Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Environment and Local Government to allow the online development of an Irish database on good environmental practice.

Training Course on Pollution Prevention for SMES
The Clean Technology Centre was commissioned by Cork Country Council to develop and present a training course to SMES from the Cork Country region, with a focus on self-help methods leading to pollution prevention within their businesses. Two sessions of the course were delivered and these covered such topics as: what is prevention?, why avoid waste?, prevention strategies, examples in Cork, searching for opportunities, worksheets, emission management plans. A 20 page self-help guide How to Prevent Waste and Emissions from Your Company was produced by the CTC to provide other SMES an active and practical tool for pollution prevention within their organisations.
